renegade craft fair - Brooklyn here we come!

An amazing project:

The Geography of Youth is a project from Restless Collective, formed by Alan Winslow and Morrigan McCarthy. They are soon to be setting out on a 30,000 mile long bicycle journey around the world, documenting through photography what life is like for hundreds of twenty-somethings in over 50 countries. Their stories will be shared through digital postcards on the Geography of Youth website.

That’s what I call a journey of a lifetime!

Taking the Great American Road Trip

Wow - school is done!
Next step: big preparations for a three month long road trip, and before leaving this lovely rainy, cold city (it’s too cold for April!), we need to be sent off in style. David and I are hosting a going-away party mix CD swap. If you bring us a mix-CD for our trip, we’ll give you one in return!
Good idea, right?

Gold Fools Projects + Adventures

make+read+build is on hiatus while I travel through the USA with my boyfriend David, exploring, making and selling art, eating tons, and swimming in the ocean. We’re blogging about our travels at Gold Fools Projects + Adventures. We’ve been on the road for about two weeks, and we’re in the panhandle of Florida, heading to the west coast.

underwater photographs

this past summer David and I traveled the roads of the USA: drove 20 000 km in a big circle, saw amazing things, and went to many flea markets.

the first of 20 rolls of film we developed were those we took underwater in key largo and lake city florida, and lake superior.

I’ve been slowly posting photos and stories from our trip across America this past summer. I’m now up to California, half way through the trip. This post has some of my favourite photos, shot on a Mamiya C330 medium format camera.

July 4: The day of Independence

We drove all day through farm fields. Through Oklahoma, coming across a roadside tourist shop that was a dream to photograph, then Texas, then into New Mexico.

July 7

Crossing into California and into the Mojave desert we had our vehicle searched for fruit. Our apples were quarantined by the state! Stopping into the desert info centre we were given directions by Merl, the ranger with a handlebar moustache.

We left the interstate and hopped on to a bit of Route 66. Barren desert landscape in between mountain ranges. Ghost towns from a highway era long gone. Fences with “no gas” signs. 120 degrees in the sun, hot enough to melt things on the dashboard.

pocketful of quarters

I am convinced that the San Francisco god’s smiled upon us when they handed us a spare bedroom in our friend Adrienne’s parent house, a stones throw away from where the Renegade Craft show was being held. This was so lucky because our initial plan was to book a room at the Jack London Inn in Oakland. We later found out while watching the news in Portland that the Jack London is considered to be the second dirtiest hotel in the US

Our first day in San Francisco we hopped on our bikes and explored the waterfront area, stopping at the Musee Mechanique to spend pocketfuls of quarters on arcade games, then drank beer and ate calamari and curly fries on the pier.

renegade san francisco

a new blog post about our 2011 road trip. It was a year ago when we were heading west towards the San Francisco and LA Renegade Craft fairs. All these photos but the last one were taken on 35mm film.

Fort Mason Festival Pavilion

This venue was amazing. The huge buildings right on the pier, the Saturday farmers market, the Friends of the San Francisco Public Library café which made great, great coffee.

The best thing about this show was being placed across from Love Jules Leather and meeting Jules and Josh, who live in Whistler, BC. Friends for life.
